Educational Outings, both curriculum-based and extra curricular, are a prominent and distinguishing feature of John Scottus Junior School.
Educational Outings
Educational field trips help to bring a subject to life, increase understanding and enable the pupils to engage in a more hands-on way with the subject. These trips are undertaken as day trips, and the school buses are often used for these trips. Many cultural sites in the North and South of Ireland are visited as part of the teaching of History, Geography and Science, formally known in the Primary School Curriculum as Social, Environmental and Scientific Education (S.E.S.E.).
Recent examples of outings include the National Print Museum, Fota Wildlife Park, W5 Science Museum and the Botanic Gardens. In addition, the pupils occasionally attend musical or theatrical performances at venues such as the Pavilion Theatre,The Ark (The National Cultural Centre for Children) and The Helix.
Class Outings
The School believes that it is good for each class to go away together for a number of days in the course of the year, and this begins in Second Class. This strengthens friendships amongst the students themselves and develops the relationship with the Class Teacher. The holidays are typically based around outdoor pursuits in Adventure Centres in Ireland. Class Outings in Summer 2009.
The Senior School has always celebrated Founders Day, which is marked on the last Friday in October preceding mid-term break. Past events have included class outings to places such as Howth Head and along the Bray to Greystones Coastal Walk. This has been developed into an all-school event, starting in 2009, with an ambition plan undertaken by the teachers and pupils. Founders Day Challenge 2009.
