Literacy Week 2016

Literacy includes the capacity to read, understand and critically appreciate various forms of communication including: spoken language, printed text, broadcast media and digital media.

Literacy Week took place in the school during the week of December 12th

Twice a day, over the intercom,  Mr Van de Belt invited students and teachers to DEAR. That is, ‘Drop Everything  And Read’ for ten minutes. Students and teachers brought their own novels to school to read at these times.

At the end of every day, two sixth year students read famous quotes from English literature over the intercom.

Subject teachers used posters, key words, word definitions and other strategies in the classroom.

The main event was The John Scottus Annual Speech Competition in which Molly Hirst won the Junior Competition with her speech “Very Own Future” and Patrick Kilroy won the Senior Competition with “The unspoken rules of engagement”.
