Skills For Life
January 14, 2026The buzz of creativity has been in the air recently as our Transition Year students dived headfirst into the exciting world of Junk Kouture. For those unfamiliar with the concept, Junk Kouture isn’t your average fashion competition. It challenges young designers to look at waste differently, urging them to craft unique, high-fashion outfits entirely from recycled materials. It’s a brilliant way to merge artistic expression with a serious message about sustainability, proving that items destined for the bin can be transformed into something truly spectacular.
Our TY students embraced this challenge with incredible enthusiasm. They spent weeks brainstorming, collecting, cutting, gluing and sewing. The process required them to think outside the box, turning discarded plastic, old cardboard and other overlooked scraps into stylish, environmentally conscious garments. Watching their initial sketches come to life through hard work and ingenuity was inspiring for everyone involved.
The culmination of all this effort took place on 15 January, right here in the school. We hosted an indoor fashion show to display the finished masterpieces. The atmosphere was electric as one member from each design group took to the runway. With music pumping and cameras flashing, the models showcased the intricate details and innovative designs their teams had worked so hard to produce.
After the runway walk, it was time for the difficult task of selecting a winner. A jury reviewed the designs, looking for originality, execution, and that “wow” factor. It was a tough competition with so much talent on display, but a decision had to be made. Massive congratulations go out to our school winners: Edward, Mairèad, and Saoirse! Their design captured exactly what Junk Kouture is all about. Well done to everyone who participated for showing us that sustainability never goes out of style.
