This September, John Scottus is opening its doors twice over: once for families considering our Primary School, and twice for those considering Secondary. Below you’ll find the details for each, along with a little on why so many of our parents tell us the decision became clear the moment they walked in.

Primary School Open Day

Why Families Choose John Scottus for Primary School

Choosing a primary school for your child is a decision made as much with instinct as with research.
Parents who come to us are usually looking for something they haven't quite found elsewhere, a place where their child can be fully themselves, where the outdoors is part of the curriculum rather than a break from it, and where a small number of familiar adults get to know their child properly. Here’s what that looks like in practice.

Learning that happens outdoors, not just about the outdoors

At John Scottus, we believe learning doesn’t only happen within four walls. It happens when small hands are in the soil of the school garden, or when children are out exploring the grounds, listening to the rustle of leaves. The land connects children to the seasons, to history, and to each other — teaching patience, growth, and a sense of their own place in the world, in a way no worksheet can. Families who join us often mention this first: the way our youngest pupils speak about the outdoors not as playtime, but as part of how they learn.

A two-class model

Rather than rigid, single-age year groups, John Scottus Primary is built around a two-class, mixed-age model, where children of different ages and stages learn together as one community. Younger children benefit from daily exposure to older role models, which builds their vocabulary, confidence, and social skills. Older children deepen their own understanding by mentoring the younger ones, building patience, empathy, and leadership in the process. Because the Irish primary curriculum revisits each subject year on year at progressively deeper levels, this structure lets every child be met exactly where they are, supported to progress at their own pace, rather than measured against the child next to them. It also means many families keep the same teacher for more than one year, building a level of trust and continuity that a straight year-group model rarely allows.

Mindfulness and stillness, from the very beginning

Just as in our Secondary School, mindfulness and moments of genuine quiet are built into the primary  school day as a real practice that grows with the child. Parents regularly tell us they chose John Scottus for exactly this reason: a calmer, less competitive environment where their child develops self-awareness and emotional regulation early, alongside strong foundational learning.

A community parents are genuinely part of Families consistently describe John Scottus as a place that welcomes real parental involvement, not just at the school gate, but in the life of the school itself. It’s part of why, for many of our current families, the Primary School is only the beginning: brothers and sisters often follow one another through, and a good
number of our Secondary School students started their John Scottus journey in Junior Infants.

An ethos that shows up in the small moments

Days like Founders Day — when our classes spend the whole day together in service to the school and wider community, in appreciation of nature, and in mindfulness and meditation — aren’t set-piece events. They’re a fairly ordinary expression of what the school is like day to day: warm, unhurried, and genuinely rooted in its values.

Secondary School Open Days

Why Families Choose John Scottus for Secondary School

If you’re weighing up secondary schools for your child, you’ve probably already read plenty of prospectuses that all start to sound alike: small classes, strong results, caring community. So let us try to be specific about what actually makes John Scottus different — and let us show you rather than just tell you, on the day itself.

Stillness is a strategy, not an add-on

At John Scottus, calm isn’t something bolted onto a busy timetable, it runs through the school’s four pillars: Stillness, Attention, Enquiry, and Unity. Students practise meditation and mindfulness as a daily discipline. Parents visiting on Open Day often mention the same thing before we even point it out: a sense of unhurriedness, students who make eye contact and seem genuinely present. As our Principal, Dr. Declan Kelly, put it, we want every student to have “the strength and stillness to give their full attention” to whatever challenge is ahead of them, exams included. The research bears this out too: students who practise real quiet develop sharper working memory, steadier emotional regulation, and a longer attention span for demanding subjects.

Small enough that pastoral care is personal, not procedural

Ask yourself what good pastoral care actually looks like on an ordinary difficult Tuesday afternoon, not in a policy document, but in practice. At John Scottus, our answer starts with scale. When a school is small enough that every teacher genuinely knows every student, pastoral care stops being a system that has to be triggered and becomes something closer to a community that simply notices. A teacher who has taught a student for three years knows their voice in class, and their body language when something’s wrong, long before a form would ever be filled in.

Independent thinkers, not exam machines

Philosophy isn’t a subject at John Scottus, it’s a disposition. The Socratic tradition of questioning what’s true, how we know it, and why it matters runs through our teaching from First Year onward. This year, two of our students were shortlisted into the national top seven of the National Philosophy Challenge, out of hundreds of entries. Small class sizes make this kind of dialogue possible: fewer students in a room means more time for each mind, more room for a half-formed idea to be taken seriously, and more chances for a teacher to ask a question and genuinely wait for the surprising answer.

A global community

Our students come from 32 different cultural backgrounds, and that’s celebrated. Multicultural Week is an honest expression of who we already are, with students sharing food, culture, and stories from home. Families arriving in Dublin from abroad consistently tell us the same thing: they noticed the warmth of the welcome at Open Day, and how quickly their child felt known rather than merely enrolled.

Breadth that builds the academics, rather than distracting from them

We take results seriously — this year our students placed 7th nationally in the IMTA Oldham Maths Competition for Girls, and our Transition Year musical drew 400 people over two nights. But we don’t see co-curricular life as separate from academic success; we see it as the source of it. A student who has stood in front of an audience and defended an idea is better prepared for the extended essay the Leaving Certificate demands. A student who has organised a fundraiser understands cause and effect in a way no textbook teaches. Holistic education, done properly, isn’t more than academics, it’s what makes the academics work.
