At John Scottus, student life goes far beyond the classroom. From weekly outings and international expeditions to student leadership roles and a house system that spans every year group, we offer a rich, character-building experience — one that students remember long after they leave.
Section 1 — Student Leadership
Led by students, for students
Our Student Leadership Team gives senior students real responsibility and a genuine voice in school life.
Roles are awarded through interview and held for a full year - preparing students for the world beyond school.
Leadership positions include:
- Head Boy & Head Girl
- Deputy Head Boy & Deputy Head Girl
- Sports Captain
- House & Community Captain
- Wellbeing Captain
- Debating Captain
- Music Captain
- Prefects
Student leaders represent the school at open days, speech and prize-giving events, and parent evenings. They also serve as a trusted voice for the student body - acting as a bridge between students and staff.
Section 2 — House System
The house system: belonging beyond your year group
Every student at John Scottus belongs to one of six houses — a cross-year community that spans First Year through Sixth Year. The house system is designed to build real relationships across age groups, foster a sense of belonging, and strengthen the school's pastoral care
House events
From house lunches with games and activities to competitions and the annual House Cup, there's always something to look forward to.
Buddy programme
Senior students are paired with incoming First Years to help them settle in and feel supported from day one.
Shared responsibility
Each house takes turns contributing to the running of the school — building teamwork and a sense of pride in the school community.
Section 3 - Transition Year
Transition Year:
a year like no other
Our Transition Year programme is one of the most active and ambitious in the country. Every week, students head out on a trip — to exhibitions, cultural events, adventure activities, or experiences in and around Dublin. It's not a gap year; it's a year packed with purpose.

Section 5 — Community & Global Citizenship
Making a difference, at home and abroad
John Scottus has a Global Citizenship Education (GCE) programme, reflecting a long-standing commitment to the UN Sustainable Development Goals. Each year the school hosts a Schools' Climate Conference — bringing together students to engage with climate action and global issues.
The school also participates in fundraising days throughout the year in support of various charities and causes.
