Laetus impraesens - Delight in the Present |
The best of the world’s great traditions of wisdom say that everyone has an inner excellence which they can come to know and express. John Scottus School takes the stand that the nature of the child in essence is pure and unlimited. In the light of this, the School aims to help the child overcome any obstacles and limitations which hinder their natural development. The job of John Scottus is to nurture and facilitate each child’s unique expression. Because the School prioritises this essential dimension, children are empowered to participate fully in the affairs of the world while also remaining connected with the unlimited core of their being.
To provide a great education for a child, and to honour their individuality, John Scottus School will:
• Help each child both to identify their particular talents, and to identify the part they have to play in life.
• Offer meditation and other core practices so that pupils can learn the art of becoming still so as to be able to focus their attention on what is in front of them.
• Work with the best and most inspiring material available so that they become acquainted with the best of our cultural heritage and develop a taste for it.
• By acknowledging the inner essence of each child, establish a relationship of trust and respect between child and teacher.
• Provide opportunities for the students to serve each other and the community at large so that they can experience the unity of humankind and can also express their own abilities.
• Understand that Home and School must work in close harmony because the home is the single greatest influence in the child’s education.
• Facilitate self-development for the Teachers so that they may act as good examples and true guides for the child.
• Structure schooling so that the different stages of development in the child are recognised. Up to the age of five, the emphasis is on love and play; from five to sixteen, reason, responsibility and self- discipline are developed; after sixteen they are treated as an adult and the Teacher becomes a mentor to them.
John Scottus School teaches a wide range of subjects in the Sciences, Arts, Sport and Languages. There is also a particular emphasis on the Classics. It will provide an ordered and supportive atmosphere for learning, be systematic and creative in its teaching methods and see that the children excel in all learning situations.
